Summer Reading Challenge - Aged 14-17? Volunteer during the summer holidays

Aged 14-17? Volunteer during the summer holidays

Central Bedfordshire Libraries are
looking for volunteers aged between 14 and 17 to help children take part in this year's Summer Reading Challenge
. It's called
the Big Friendly Read,
runs right through the summer holidays from 16 July to 10 September
. Last year over 5250 children took part in the Summer Reading Challenge in Central Bedfordshire, and this year
're hoping for even more.

As a volunteer you'll be signing children up to the Summer Reading Challenge and giving out incentives

. You'll
talk to children about the books they have been reading, and help out with library activities, events and promotion. It's a great opportunity to make a positive contribution to your community, and to gain experience and skills.

You'll need enthusiasm for books and for working with children, and the ability to communicate well with children and their families. You'll get plenty of support and training from

library staff in a friendly and safe library environment.

If you're interested just talk to staff at your local library, who will be happy to give you more information and an application form. Volunteers aged 14 and 15 will need a parent or guardian to sign their volunteering form, and volunteers aged 16 and 17 will need a referee.

Librarian Theatre Presents: The Book's The Thing

Step into Hamlet’s Library
Where the Book’s the thing…

to catch the conscience of the King.

“The Book’s the Thing” is Hamlet by William Shakespeare, but not as it’s ever been seen before! The show will tour UK libraries in Spring 2016, coinciding with the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death. A fast-paced hour long play performed by a cast of 3, newly adapted from the original text by Tom Cuthbertson and Kelly Eva-May, “The Book’s the Thing” will make a great introduction to Elizabethan Text – and seasoned Shakespeare fans will love this refreshing new take on a classic too.

Magic at May Fayre on 7th May : Noon to 4PM

Peter Gardini, Magician, will be putting on a magic show for children from 2-3pm on the Village Green in Houghton Regis on May 7th.

Teas and coffees will be served in the Village Green Pavilion from 12 Noon by Houghton Regis Helpers.

The Free event is organised by Houghton Regis Town Council.
